Urinalysis Training for Nurses and HCAs
Course Details:
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common bacterial infections seen across primary care, hospitals and care homes, yet symptoms can often be missed, misunderstood or mistaken for other conditions, particularly in older adults, catheterised patients and people with complex health needs. Delayed recognition or inappropriate management can increase the risk of complications including pyelonephritis, urosepsis, avoidable hospital admission and inappropriate antibiotic use.
This course supports healthcare professionals to recognise the signs and symptoms of UTI, undertake safe patient assessment, understand when urinalysis is appropriate, and apply current NICE CKS guidance to escalation and management decisions.
Learners also explore antimicrobial stewardship, risk factors, referral pathways and the importance of clinical judgement when supporting patients with suspected UTI.
Learning Outcomes – UTI Red Flags and Escalation Pathways
By the end of this CPD-accredited course, participants will be able to:
- Explain how urinary tract infections develop, their impact on health, and the key risk factors that increase susceptibility.
- Recognise the typical and atypical signs and symptoms of UTI across different groups, including older adults, men, and catheterised patients.
- Apply current NICE CKS guidance to assess, escalate, and support management of UTI, including when urinalysis is appropriate and how to interpret results.
- Outline appropriate referral, treatment, and escalation pathways, recognising the importance of early intervention and antimicrobial stewardship.
- Reflect on real-world case studies to strengthen clinical judgement, accountability, and confidence in UTI management.
