Asthma Update Training for Healthcare Professionals

Course Details:

Delivered in partnership with Clarion healthcare Education, this course refreshes key areas of asthma care, including diagnosis, A&P, history taking, objective testing, phenotype awareness, risk, exacerbations, medicines and non-pharmacological management.

Asthma remains a significant safety issue in the UK. Asthma + Lung UK reports that four people die every day because of asthma attacks, and that 2 out of 3 asthma deaths are preventable. Regular asthma update training helps clinicians recognise risk earlier, support safer reviews and strengthen patient education around treatment, follow-up and self-management

This session is designed to support clinicians who are involved in asthma reviews, respiratory assessment and long-term condition care. This course includes an overview of updated asthma guidelines and highlights key changes relevant to clinical practice. It also explores whole-person care, including mental health, obesity, co-existing conditions and differentials, with case study discussion around CYP, occupational asthma and adult-onset asthma.

Learning Outcomes – Asthma Update for Nurses

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Refresh their understanding of asthma diagnosis, including history taking, objective testing and phenotype awareness
  • Recognise why asthma phenotypes matter in relation to risk, treatment and review
  • Identify key asthma risk factors, including indicators linked to poor control and exacerbation risk
  • Describe relevant asthma guideline updates and consider how they apply to clinical practice
  • Apply a whole-person approach, including mental health, obesity, co-existing conditions, occupational triggers and differential diagnoses
  • Review asthma medicines, treatment principles and evidence-based management
  • Discuss non-pharmacological asthma care, including inhaler technique, patient education and person-centred goal setting
  • Consider opportunities for practice improvement, such as audit, risk stratification, system review or implementing change in asthma clinics
