COPD Update Training for Healthcare Professionals

Course Details:

Delivered in partnership with Clarion healthcare Education, this training refreshes key areas of COPD care, including diagnosis, A&P, history taking, objective testing, phenotype awareness, exacerbation risk, medicines and non-pharmacological management.

COPD has a significant impact across UK healthcare. NICE states that around 1.2 million people in the UK have a diagnosis of COPD, with many more people likely to remain undiagnosed. Regular COPD update training helps clinicians recognise risk, review treatment safely, support follow-up and strengthen patient education around treatment, self-management and person-centred goal setting.

This session is designed to support clinicians involved in COPD reviews, respiratory assessment and long-term condition care. This course includes an overview of updated COPD guidelines and highlights key changes relevant to clinical practice. It also explores whole-person care, including mental health, obesity and co-existing conditions, with case study discussion around breathlessness and exacerbator phenotype.

Learning Outcomes – COPD Update for Nurses

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Refresh their understanding of COPD diagnosis, including history taking, objective testing and clinical presentation
  • Describe COPD phenotypes and why they matter in relation to risk, treatment planning and review
  • Identify key COPD risk factors, including exacerbation risk, breathlessness and indicators for follow-up
  • Understand relevant COPD guideline updates and consider how they apply to clinical practice
  • Apply a whole-person approach, including mental health, obesity, co-existing conditions and the wider impact of COPD
  • Review COPD medicines, treatment principles and evidence-based medicine management
  • Discuss non-pharmacological COPD care, including person-centred goal setting and supported self-management
  • Consider opportunities for practice improvement, such as audit, risk stratification, system review or implementing change within COPD clinics
