Urine Dipstick Testing and Infection Recognition Training
Course Details:
Urinalysis is a simple but valuable clinical assessment tool that can help identify conditions such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney disease, diabetes and dehydration. Accurate urine testing and appropriate interpretation can support early recognition of illness, timely escalation and safer patient care across healthcare settings.
This practical training course explores the safe collection, testing and interpretation of urine samples, including dipstick urinalysis, specimen handling, infection prevention and common abnormalities such as blood, protein, glucose, ketones, nitrites and leukocytes. Learners will also develop awareness of UTI risk factors, complications, escalation processes and the wider impact urinary infections can have on patients and families.
Older adults account for almost three-fifths of UTI-related hospital admissions in England, with urinary tract infections causing more than 800,000 hospital admissions over a five-year period. Accurate urinalysis, early recognition of symptoms and appropriate escalation can help reduce complications such as urosepsis, kidney infection and avoidable hospital admission.
