Recognising Red Flags in Ear Care Consultations

Course Details:

Ear problems and hearing difficulties are a common reason for healthcare consultations across primary care, community services and care homes, yet access to safe and effective ear care services can vary significantly across the UK. Poor assessment or inappropriate intervention may lead to unnecessary procedures, infection, trauma, delayed diagnosis or avoidable referral.

This course supports healthcare professionals to develop confidence in ear assessment, otoscopy, earwax management, ear irrigation decision-making and the recognition of red flag symptoms. Learners will explore current NICE guidance, safe clinical practice and common ear conditions including otitis externa, otitis media and Eustachian tube dysfunction, helping improve both patient safety and clinical decision-making.

Learning Outcomes – Improved Ear Assessment Skills for Nurses

  • Undertake a safe and structured ear assessment, including history taking and otoscopic examination.
  • Identify normal and abnormal findings, including earwax characteristics, common ear conditions, and red flag symptoms.
  • Apply current guidance to make informed decisions about ear irrigation or referral.
