Respiratory Assessment Training for Primary Care

Course Details:

Delivered in partnership with Clarion healthcare Education, this foundation course supports healthcare professionals to strengthen their understanding of respiratory disease processes, history taking, basic respiratory assessment, diagnosis awareness, commonly used inhalers and the importance of patient education and self-management.

According to NHS England, respiratory disease affects one in five people and is the third biggest cause of death in England, which makes high-quality respiratory training an important part of safer care delivery.

Good respiratory care relies on confident assessment, accurate monitoring, safe escalation and clear patient conversations. Poor technique, missed deterioration, incomplete reviews or lack of confidence around exacerbations can increase clinical risk, particularly for people living with asthma, COPD or overlapping long-term conditions. 

Learning Outcomes – Asthma and COPD Foundation Training

This course is designed to support foundation-level respiratory knowledge and confidence in asthma and COPD care. By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understanding disease processes and how the person may be affected
  • Awareness of history taking, respiratory assessment and diagnosis
  • Awareness of differential diagnosis of respiratory disease
  • Awareness of commonly used inhalers & devices to work towards robust inhaler technique check
  • Understanding of the importance of patient education and self-management
  • Be working towards undertaking a basic patient review
  • Understanding of an effective respiratory consultation
