Delirium Management Training for Healthcare Staff

Course Details:

Delirium is a medical emergency that can develop suddenly over hours or days, yet it is still frequently missed in healthcare and care settings, particularly the quieter hypoactive form. This course helps learners recognise the early signs of delirium, understand common triggers and apply practical, person-centred approaches to support safer care and timely escalation.

The session explores the differences between delirium and dementia, risk factors, behavioural changes, observations, communication, documentation and compassionate support strategies. Learners will also explore delirium in hospital, residential care and end-of-life settings, helping teams feel more confident identifying when someone is “not themselves”.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists reports that up to one third of delirium cases may be preventable with early recognition and management of underlying causes.

Learning Outcomes – Delirium Recognition and Management

By the end of this CPD-accredited course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe what delirium is and explain how it differs from dementia.
  • Identify key risk factors, early signs and common behavioural changes linked to delirium.
  • Use structured approaches to recognise and assess delirium, including when to escalate for clinical review.
  • Apply person-centred strategies and evidence-based interventions to support individuals experiencing delirium.
  • Explain the importance of observations and accurate documentation in safe, effective delirium management.
  • Recognise how delirium may present at the end of life and how to support patients and families compassionately.
