Travel Vaccination Training for Nurses

Course Details:

Providing accurate travel health advice is an important part of protecting travellers from preventable illness and supporting safer international travel. This course explores travel risk assessments, vaccine guidance, malaria prevention, traveller education and current UK travel health recommendations.

The training also covers vulnerable traveller groups, mosquito-borne diseases, legal responsibilities and safe vaccine practice. Poor travel health advice or incomplete risk assessment can place travellers at unnecessary risk and lead to missed opportunities for prevention and education.

In 2024, the UK reported 2,106 malaria cases in returning travellers, the highest number recorded since 2001, highlighting the growing importance of accurate travel health advice, effective risk assessment and up-to-date clinician knowledge.

Learning Outcomes – Travel Vaccines Explained

By the end of this CPD-accredited course, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish between NHS and non-NHS travel vaccines, including indications, schedules, and documentation requirements.
  • Recognise mosquito-borne and water-borne disease risks (e.g., malaria, dengue, schistosomiasis) and outline key prevention strategies.
  • Discuss considerations for vulnerable traveller groups, including older adults, pregnant travellers, those with chronic conditions, or disabilities.
  • Understand legal and professional responsibilities, including consent, safeguarding (FGM, forced marriage), and accountability under the NMC Code.
