Spirometry Refresher Training for Primary Care
Course Details:
Delivered in partnership with Clarion healthcare Education, this training is for healthcare professionals already performing spirometry and/or reporting spirometry results. Spirometry is an essential lung function investigation used to support respiratory assessment and diagnosis, and the framework highlights that it should be quality assured and performed by professionals assessed as competent against ARTP standards.
Both options include space to discuss practical issues in clinical practice, with the reporting route also using workshops, case studies and discussion around interpretation. The update covers guideline changes, implications for operators and practices, the National Spirometry Register, ARTP reaccreditation and the importance of running a gold standard spirometry service.
NICE highlights the need for trained, competent staff and quality-control processes when using post-bronchodilator spirometry to support COPD diagnosis. This update helps teams maintain safe, current and quality-assured spirometry practice.
The course has two focused options: the General Spirometry Update for staff performing spirometry in practice, and the Spirometry Reporting Update for staff expected to report on spirometry traces.
General Spirometry Update: Performing Spirometry
This option focuses on the performance of quality assured spirometry in clinical practice. It includes guideline updates, implications for operators and practices, the ARTP National Spirometry Register, reaccreditation, care and maintenance of the spirometer, and discussion around issues staff may face when performing spirometry.
By the end of the General Spirometry Update, learners will be able to:
- Revise the requirements for offering a gold standard spirometry service in primary care, including performance, care and maintenance of the spirometer
- Understand the requirements for entry onto the National Spirometry Register and how to maintain this
- Advise the primary care team of the issues raised during the study day

Spirometry Reporting Update: Learning Outcomes
This option focuses on a structured approach to spirometry interpretation and reporting. It includes interactive workshops, case studies and discussion around quality assured diagnostic spirometry and reporting on spirometry traces. The framework also highlights normal and abnormal spirometry patterns in relation to patient history and supporting respiratory diagnosis
By the end of the Spirometry Reporting Update, learners will be able to:
- Develop a structured approach to spirometry interpretation
- Increase understanding of normal and abnormal spirometry patterns, especially in relation to patient history and supporting a respiratory diagnosis
- Understand the requirements for entry onto the National Spirometry Register and how to maintain this
