Introduction to Immunisation and Vaccination for HCSWs
Course Details:
Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to prevent serious illness and protect public health. Healthcare assistants play a crucial role in supporting immunisation programmes and patient engagement.
This foundation vaccination course provides the essential skills and knowledge to deliver vaccines safely and confidently in line with NHS England and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) guidance.
Learners gain confidence in vaccine administration, cold chain management, patient communication, and anaphylaxis response. The session is led by a Registered Nurse clinical immunisation specialist and provides a safe, open space to discuss questions and learn from an experienced vaccinator.
In 2023–24, vaccination rates in England fell below the national target for every childhood vaccine, only about 9 in 10 children completed their full 6-in-1 course by their first birthday. This decline highlights why a skilled, confident vaccination workforce is essential to improving uptake. By building a confident, empowered and informed workforce through our immunisation course, Hickby helps drive higher uptake, support public health goals, and restore trust across communities.

What to Expect
Our Foundation Immunisation Training follows a blended model, in line with the National Minimum Standards for Vaccination Training.
At Hickby Clinical Training, we deliver one full day of face-to-face learning, where participants engage in practical demonstrations, case discussions, and Q&A with a vaccination specialist.
Learners are strongly recommended to complete the NHS England e-learning immunisation modules either before or immediately after attending to fulfil the full two-day learning requirement.
Recommended e-learning modules:
Immunisation e-Learning Programme (e-LfH)
Flu Immunisation Programme (e-LfH)
COVID-19 Vaccination e-Learning (e-LfH)
These modules include detailed content on vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, influenza, shingles, pneumococcal infection, hepatitis B, and RSV.
Learners should focus on the vaccines they personally administer in practice, following local policies and scope of practice. For example, some HCAs may deliver shingles or flu vaccinations, while others may only support adult or COVID-19 vaccination programmes.
After completing both the e-learning and the Hickby training day, learners must complete a vaccination competency assessment under supervision by a suitably qualified mentor before vaccinating independently. This ensures compliance with the UKHSA Core Curriculum and promotes safe, accountable vaccination practice.
