Dysphagia Care Management

Course Details:

Designed for Adult Social Care staff at all levels, this course provides essential knowledge for recognising and supporting individuals with Dysphagia. The session explores the physical, psychological, and social impact of swallowing difficulties, alongside safe, person‑centred approaches to eating and drinking.
 

Participants will gain a clear understanding of Dysphagia Management Plans, risk factors, and best‑practice mealtime support. The course also covers key ethical and legal considerations, including supporting individuals with learning disabilities.

 

By the end of the session, attendees will feel more confident in promoting safe swallowing, reducing risks, and improving the mealtime experience for those living with Dysphagia.

Learning Outcomes – Dysphagia Care Training

By the end of this CPD-accredited course, participants will be able to:

  • Define dysphagia and describe the four stages of swallowing.
  • Identify common causes of dysphagia, including acute, chronic, neurological, and anatomical factors.
  • Recognise signs and symptoms of swallowing difficulties and their associated risks.
  • Describe the assessment and referral process, including the role of Speech and Language Therapy and diagnostic investigations.
  • Understand key treatment and management approaches, including swallow therapy, dietary modification, thickened fluids, feeding tubes, and IDDSI levels.
  • Apply safe‑swallowing practices, environmental considerations, and the APE strategy in day‑to‑day care.
  • Respond to choking and aspiration risks, following recommended safety guidelines.
  • Recognise the psychosocial impact of dysphagia and support person‑centred mealtime experiences.
  • Contribute to effective care planning, monitoring for malnutrition, and following organisational policies and best practice.
