Course Overview
This 3 hour training course will be delivered by a Clinical Nurse Educator with first hand clinical experience.

Session Aim:
The aim of this course is to provide primary care staff with the necessary knowledge and practical skills to accurately measure a patient's weight, height, BMI, and waist circumference using appropriate techniques and equipment, and interpret the results against normal limits. This will enable them to identify and monitor overweight and obesity in patients and provide appropriate weight management support, as well as address weight issues that are seldom discussed in primary care consultations.
This course will also cover principles of healthy eating and exercise for maintaining a healthy weight, including strategies for overcoming barriers to healthy behaviours. Participants will learn motivational interviewing techniques to support patients in achieving and maintaining weight loss, including setting goals, monitoring progress, and addressing setbacks.
Learning Outcomes:
- Accurately measure a patient's weight, height, and waist circumference using appropriate techniques and equipment.
- Calculate a patient's BMI and interpret the results against normal limits.
- Explain the relationship between BMI and health status, including health risks associated with high or low BMI values.
- Describe principles of healthy eating and exercise, including strategies for overcoming barriers to healthy behaviours.
- Apply motivational interviewing techniques to support patients in achieving and maintaining weight loss, including setting goals, monitoring progress, and addressing setbacks.
