Week 3
Nutrition and Hydration including Dysphagia Care and Introduction to Wound Care & Pressure Area Care.

Week 3 Learning Outcomes:

Nutrition, Hydration and Dysphagia:

  • Recognise the importance of good nutrition and hydration in maintaining overall health.
  • To define the following terms: dehydration, malnutrition and dysphagia.
  • To recognise signs and symptoms of dehydration, malnutrition and dysphagia and the consequences to health.
  • Identify methods to optimise and encourage diet and fluid intake, including feeding methods.
  • Explore the IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative) and how this is utilised for residents with dysphagia.
  • Utilise MUST (Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool) and its role in highlighting those at risk.

Introduction to Wound Care & Pressure Area Care:

  • To examine the anatomy & physiology of normal healthy skin.
  • To classify the stages of the wound healing process.
  • To conduct a simple wound assessment using T.I.M.E.
  • To state the importance of nutrition in relation to wound healing.
  • Identify and treat skin tears.
  • To gain knowledge on pressure ulcer prevention and identify pressure ulcers.
  • To demonstrate the significance of assessment tools: MUST, Waterlow as contributing factors to progressive wound care.
  • Determine most appropriate dressing to apply and use.

Learner Self-Study
Review the importance of good nutrition and hydration in maintaining health and wellbeing.

This programme incorperates practical elements and  is delivered face-to-face
