Week 1
Introduction to UpSkill SCC, Reflective Practice, Fundamentals of Infection Control, Recognising a Deteriorating Patient, Sepsis Awareness and Measuring Observations.

Week 1 Learning Outcomes:

Fundamentals of Infection Control:

  • Why is infection control important?
  • Understand accountability and responsibility.
  • Knowledge of infectious agent contact and the importance of hand hygiene.
  • Knowledge of handling clinical waste and spillages in a clinical setting.
  • The importance of equipment decontamination using ANTT.
  • Understanding the clean clinical environment

Recognising a Deteriorating patient, Sepsis Awareness and Measuring Observations:

  • Utilise an ABCDE approach to recognise a deteriorating patient using a simple ‘look, listen, feel’ method.
  • Understand what ‘normal’ physical observation parameters are.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use NEWS2 chart and plan care.
  • Identify Care home specific tools that can support the escalation of an unwell resident.
  • Understand the SBARD format for giving information in a logical way to ensure the most accurate picture is given to other staff or HCP.

Reflective Practice:

  • What is reflective practice.
  • What are the key principles to reflection.
  • Models to support you in reflecting including use of templates.
  • Identifying and implementing improvements.
  • Barriers to reflection.
  • Top tips to takeaway to support you in self reflection

Learner Self-Study
Complete a NEWS2 assessment on three patients within your clinical setting with your mentor.

This programme incorperates practical elements and  is delivered face-to-face
