Sepsis Awareness

Course Overview

This 3 hour training course will be delivered by a Clinical Nurse Educator with first hand clinical experience, drawing on their own experience and knowledge.

Suitable For:
This course is suitable for all healthcare professionals, registered or unregistered, working in any setting, including hospitals, clinics, community care, nursing homes, and midwifery and child services.

Session Aim:
Sepsis is a medical emergency that requires prompt recognition and treatment to prevent serious complications and death. This course provides healthcare professionals with evidence-based teaching on the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and risk factors associated with sepsis, as well as practical guidance on how to identify and manage sepsis in a clinical setting.

Participants will learn about common causes of sepsis, including bacterial and viral infections, and how to assess patients for signs and symptoms of sepsis using established tools such as NEWS2 and other clinical decision support systems. The course will also cover appropriate treatment options, including antimicrobial therapy, fluid resuscitation, and supportive care, as well as the importance of timely escalation of care. By the end of the course, participants will be competent in recognising and responding to sepsis, and able to provide high-quality care to patients at risk for this life-threatening condition.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define sepsis, its pathogenesis, and epidemiology.
  • Evaluate risk reduction and prevention strategies, including early recognition and treatment.
  • Analyse the pathophysiology of sepsis, including its effects on different organ systems.
