Recognising a Deteriorating Patient
Course Overview
This 3 hours training course will be delivered by a Clinical Nurse Educator with first hand clinical experience, drawing on their own experience and knowledge.

All healthcare professionals in a range of settings looking to obtain a new skill or update their existing knowledge.
Session Aim:
According to a report published by the NHS Improvement in 2019, the deterioration of patients is a significant concern in healthcare settings, with an estimated 15% of hospital inpatients experiencing clinical deterioration. With this training we aim to equip healthcare professionals with the necessary skills to identify and respond to early signs of deterioration effectively.
The aim of this course is to provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to effectively identify early indicators of deteriorating health, recognize normal and abnormal parameters of vital signs, demonstrate the use of the NEWS2 chart for care planning, effectively communicate and document information for prompt intervention, and apply acquired knowledge to develop appropriate plans of care for different scenarios.
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify the early indicators of deteriorating health.
- Recognise the normal and abnormal parameters of temperature, respirations, pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturations.
- Demonstrate the ability to use NEWS2 chart and plan care.
- Identify how to effectively communicate to other health care professionals and document in order to escalate and ensure prompt intervention.
- Apply knowledge gained to scenarios, stating appropriate plan of care
