Course Overview

This 3 hour training course will be delivered by a Clinical Nurse Educator with first hand clinical experience.

Suitable For:
This content is aimed at registered healthcare professionals across all healthcare settings. Suitable for those new to IV Cannulation or those looking to enhance their current skills/knowledge and review current practice.

Session Aim:
Peripheral intravenous cannulation is a commonly performed procedure in healthcare settings. According to the NHS, approximately 1 in 3 hospital patients receive an IV cannula during their stay (NHS Improvement, 2021). This highlights the significance of this procedure in delivering essential fluids, medications, and therapies to patients.

By providing healthcare professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills through this training course, we aim to enhance patient outcomes, minimise complications, and contribute to the overall improvement of care delivery in line with the NHS guidelines and best practices.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Be aware of legislation and regulatory control around cannulation.
  • Have an understanding of informed consent and accountability related to invasive procedures.
  • Understand the importance of infection prevention & control including basic anatomy and physiology of skin and blood vessels.
  • Review the required equipment for cannulation.
  • Be able to demonstrate cannulation and underpinning knowledge of IV therapy.
  • Be aware of related indications and contraindications, VIP Scoring, troubleshooting, related
    thrombosis and prescribed therapies.
  • Have knowledge of documentation regarding incident reporting and the escalation process

This training incorperates practical elements and  is delivered face-to-face
