This content is aimed at Registered Healthcare professionals across all healthcare settings. Suitable for those new to providing intravenous therapy or those looking to enhance their current skills/knowledge and review current practice.
Session Aim:
Medication error is the most common type of medical error, and intravenous medicines are at a higher risk as they are complex to prepare and administer.
This session aims to provide practitioners skills and knowledge and practice to safely administer medications and manage the care of patients receiving IV therapy. Participants will have the opportunity to use anatomical models to participate in practical demonstrations of this treatment.
Learning Outcomes:
- Provide clear and concise definitions of key terms associated with IV Therapy.
- Discuss and comprehend relevant legislation, accountability, and consent related to IV therapy.
- Explore different methods of administration, including continuous infusion, intermittent infusion, and direct intermittent injection.
- Demonstrate proper procedures for IV attachment and saline lock in accordance with ANTT (Aseptic Non-Touch Technique).
- Understand the steps involved in administering and discontinuing IV therapy.
- Recognise potential complications of IV therapy and develop appropriate nursing interventions.
- Emphasise the importance of accurate documentation, pharmacovigilance, and knowing. when to escalate issues related to IV therapy
