Falls Prevention Training
Course Overview
This 3 hour training course will be delivered by a Clinical Nurse Educator with first hand clinical experience, drawing on their own experience and knowledge.

This content is aimed at all healthcare staff looking to gain an understanding of the subject or enhance their knowledge and skills.
Session Aim:
Falls are the number one reason older people are taken into the emergency department in a hospital. In around 5% of cases a fall leads to a fracture and hospitalisation. Unaddressed fall hazards in the home are estimated to cost the NHS in England £435 million. (gov.uk).
The aim of the session is to educate learners about the importance of falls prevention, causes of a fall, assessment tools, risk factors and how to interact with a person(s) who has fallen. Understanding the causes of a fall can greatly improve our patients mobility and independence.
Learning Outcomes:
- Define what is classed as a fall.
- Gain knowledge of how to assess and manage patients at risk of falls.
- Identifying intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors and appropriate interventions.
- Be aware of how to treat a patient who has fallen using an appropriate assessment tool
(e.g. SPLATT). - Be aware of local policies and procedures including incident reporting in relations to
falls. - Gain an understanding of the impact falls have on healthcare services.
