Falls Prevention Training

Course Overview

This 3 hour training course will be delivered by a Clinical Nurse Educator with first hand clinical experience, drawing on their own experience and knowledge.

Suitable For:
This content is aimed at all healthcare staff looking to gain an understanding of the subject or enhance their knowledge and skills.

Session Aim:
Falls are the number one reason older people are taken into the emergency department in a hospital. In around 5% of cases a fall leads to a fracture and hospitalisation. Unaddressed fall hazards in the home are estimated to cost the NHS in England £435 million. (gov.uk).

The aim of the session is to educate learners about the importance of falls prevention, causes of a fall, assessment tools, risk factors and how to interact with a person(s) who has fallen. Understanding the causes of a fall can greatly improve our patients mobility and independence.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define what is classed as a fall.
  • Gain knowledge of how to assess and manage patients at risk of falls.
  • Identifying intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors and appropriate interventions.
  • Be aware of how to treat a patient who has fallen using an appropriate assessment tool
    (e.g. SPLATT).
  • Be aware of local policies and procedures including incident reporting in relations to
    falls.
  • Gain an understanding of the impact falls have on healthcare services.
