Epilepsy Care Training

Course Overview

This 3 hour training course will be delivered by a Clinical Nurse Educator with first hand clinical experience, drawing on their own experience and knowledge.

Suitable For:
The contents of this course aimed at Adult Social Care Staff and is suitable for all staffing levels.

Session Aim:
To equip participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in providing top-tier care for residents with epilepsy. By the end of this course, participants will have a deep understanding of epilepsy and its various aspects, including seizure risks, types, triggers, and physiological effects. They will be proficient in administering treatments like Buccal Midazolam and applying the recovery position when necessary.

Moreover, participants will gain insights into vagus nerve stimulation, SUDEP, and the day-to-day challenges faced by individuals with epilepsy, enabling them to adapt care approaches for improved well-being. Emphasis will be placed on person-centered care, effective documentation, risk assessments, and an understanding of mental capacity within the framework of the Mental Capacity Act 2005. Case studies will enhance practical learning and application of acquired knowledge.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognise epilepsy risks, symptoms, seizure types, and triggers.
  • Understand the physiological effects of epilepsy.
  • Learn epilepsy treatments, including Buccal Midazolam and recovery positioning.
  • Observe residents' general health as required.
  • Address daily challenges in epilepsy care and enhance well-being.
  • Emphasise person-centered care.
  • Focus on effective documentation and risk assessment procedures.
