Course Overview

This 3 hour training course will be delivered by a Clinical Nurse Educator with first hand clinical experience.

Suitable For:
This content is aimed at healthcare professionals across all healthcare settings. Suitable for those new to bowel management or those looking to enhance their current skills/knowledge and review current practice.

Session Aim:
The aim of this session is to educate healthcare professionals about effective bowel management and emphasise the importance of maintaining regular bowel function. By increasing knowledge about the local and systemic effects of constipation, participants will be better equipped to prevent complications associated with constipation.

Bowel care is often overlooked in patient/client care, despite its fundamental role in improving their quality of life. Many individuals hesitate to discuss or admit to bowel problems, underscoring the need for healthcare professionals to address these issues sensitively. This training will provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to deliver optimal bowel management care, aligning with the Royal College of Nursing's commitment to promoting excellence in healthcare. Ultimately, by the end of the session, healthcare professionals will be equipped to enhance patients' well-being and satisfaction through effective bowel management practices.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the Bowel and Digestive System.
  • Develop knowledge regarding common issues related to bowel function, such as constipation and diarrhea.
  • Acquire the skills to collect a stool specimen and perform a thorough stool assessment.
  • Obtain an overview of available medications for managing bowel function.
  • Recognise the vital importance of nutrition and hydration in effective bowel management.
