Basic Life Support & Anaphylaxis Update
Course Overview
This 3 hour session will be delivered by a Clinical Nurse Educator with first hand clinical experience.
Suitable For:
Groups of up to 10 learners. This content is aimed as an update for all staff working within a healthcare setting.
Session Aim:
Anaphylaxis is a critical and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that demands prompt medical attention. In recent years, there has been a notable rise in the prevalence of anaphylaxis in the UK, leading to an increase in reported cases. In emergency scenarios where cardiac arrest, choking, or other medical emergencies pose a threat to someone's life, Basic Life Support (BLS) plays a pivotal role. Swift utilisation of BLS techniques enhances the likelihood of survival through early intervention.
The aim of this session is to enhance the participants knowledge, competency and confidence surrounding the provision of basic life support & anaphylaxis to those working in health and social care. This training is in line with UK Resuscitation Council Guidelines.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understanding individual roles and responsibilities when responding to an emergency situation.
- Assessing patients using a systematic approach and initiate appropriate emergency response.
- Discuss the use of automated external defibrillators (AED).
- Current Resuscitation Council Guidelines and COVID-19.
- Responding to adults patients who have choked appropriately.
- To recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis.
- Describe common ‘triggers’ that could pre-empt an allergic response.
- Learn to apply basic emergency treatment in response to a potential fatality.
- Learn about the common auto injectors required to reverse the effects of anaphylaxis.
- To know how and when to administer adrenaline to a patient in order to achieve a positive
patient outcome.
