Dementia Awareness, End of Life Care and Venepuncture (Phlebotomy)
Week 5 Learning Outcomes:
Dementia Awareness:
- To develop an understanding of the different types of dementia.
- To have a knowledge of the signs and symptoms of dementia.
- To be able to recognise those that are at risk of dementia.
- To understand how to provide patient centred care to an individual with dementia.
- To be able to communicate effectively with individuals living with dementia.
- To understand what advanced care planning is and why it is important, particularly when approaching end of life care.
End of Life Care:
- Have an overview of the National Guidance that surrounds Palliative and End of Life care.
- Identify the differences between Palliative and End of Life care.
- Understand the term Advanced Care Planning.
- Understand the importance of recognising when a person is close to death.
- Be able to identify signs that a person is in the last few days/hours of life.
- Be able to identify symptoms that may be present when a person is dying.
- Be able to assess and manage these symptoms holistically.
- Understand the importance of good communication and its impact in healthcare.
- Recognise the impact of good communication on the individual and the legacy with families.
Venepuncture (Phlebotomy):
- Understand accountability measures in relation to venepuncture procedure.
- Understand the importance of informed consent and capacity when performing venepuncture on patients.
- Understand infection prevention, its significance and its application when performing a venepuncture.
- Describe the structure of blood vessels and identify the venous system of the arm in order to locate appropriate veins for venepuncture.
- Demonstrate the ability to select appropriate equipment and sample bottles for venepuncture.
- Identify health and safety issues related to safe practice when performing phlebotomy.
- Demonstrate the ability to identify and manage common problems encountered during phlebotomy.
- Demonstrate the ability to prepare and support patients throughout the venepuncture (phlebotomy) and blood sampling procedure, taking into consideration patient comfort and safety.
