Fundamentals of Tracheostomy Care
Course Overview
This 3 hour, CPD accredited training course will be delivered by a Clinical Nurse Educator with first hand clinical experience.

This content is Suitable for healthcare professionals of all levels and settings, whether new to tracheostomy care or seeking to enhance their current skills and knowledge while reviewing current practices.
Session Aim:
This course aims to deepen learners' knowledge of the anatomical and physiological structures of the head and neck in relation to tracheostomies. Participants will also gain an understanding of the conditions and situations that may necessitate a tracheostomy.
Through hands-on learning, participants will be able to demonstrate best practices in tracheostomy care and management, including identifying and managing complications, as well as troubleshooting common issues that may arise.
Learners will gain insight into the emotional impact that tracheostomy procedures can have on patients and their families, and develop strategies for providing compassionate care in a patient centred manner.
Learning Outcomes:
- Recognise the indications for tracheostomy insertion and differentiate between various types of tracheostomy tubes.
- Understand the anatomy and physiology surrounding tracheostomy and apply this knowledge to assess and manage any associated complications effectively.
- Describe the procedure for tracheostomy insertion and identify potential risks and complications as well as stoma care.
- Appreciate the physical and emotional impact of a tracheostomy on the patient and their family members.
- Demonstrate the skills required to perform suctioning, including selecting the appropriate equipment, measuring cuff pressures, changing inner tubes, and humidifying the airway.
- Understand the importance of obtaining informed consent from the patient and/or their caregivers, and demonstrate accountability in documenting tracheostomy care and any complications.
